A project at Brune Medical Centre, Gosport costing £875k, funded by Community Health Partnerships, to remodel underutilised space has reached financial close. This will allow the expansion of the Talking Therapies service delivered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight (HIOW) Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust relocate to a purpose-built space in a modern, accessible health centre within the heart of the Gosport community. It will provide a high-quality therapeutic environment for service users and NHS staff.

Repurposing vacant estate to meet local mental health needs

The project will turn underused space into a modern facility for the Talking Therapies service provided by HIOW Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This move will help meet the increasing demand for local mental health services and aligns with CHP’s mission to deliver high quality neighbourhood health facilities.

Once complete, the Brune Medical Centre will have four new therapy rooms and an open plan administration space for 16 staff. These improvements will provide additional capacity for approximately 2,100 therapy appointments per year and help ensure residents can access care near to where they live. NHS Talking Therapies are a national primary care service working alongside GPs to help people recover from the most common mental health problems like anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD and phobias.

Working in partnership to deliver the remodel at Brune Medical Centre

The project demonstrates strong partnership working between CHP, Solent Estates Partnerships Limited (LIFTCo) as owner of the Medical Centre and its supply chain partners, working with NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board (ICB) and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (the clinical provider), with the team from providing project management services on behalf of LIFTCo to deliver the remodel. The project team are on site at Brune Medical Centre from mid-March 2026.

Sustainable reuse with Dentaid The Dental Charity

As part of the wider works, redundant dental equipment from the site, including dental chairs, X-ray equipment and storage units, will be collected by Dentaid The Dental Charity for reuse in its new premises in Portsmouth. Dentaid works to relieve dental pain and improve oral health for people who struggle to access services, supporting communities experiencing health inequalities across England through its mobile clinics and local partnerships.

Addressing local population health needs

The new service will be accessible for residents in surrounding communities and will be co located with the Willow Group GP practice, enabling closer collaboration between primary care and mental health teams.

The Gosport area has high levels of deprivation and below average health outcomes, with higher prevalence of obesity, diabetes, depression, and multiple long-term conditions. The population is also ageing, with nearly 25% of residents aged over 65. Repurposing vacant space into modern, flexible therapy accommodation directly addresses these pressures and helps improve access to mental health support.

Simon Waters, Regional Director for South and East, Community Health Partnerships, said:

“Moving the Talking Therapies team into modern, accessible Brune Medical Centre, will make a real difference for people living with mental health conditions, while improving the everyday experience for patients, staff and visitors alike. This project is a fantastic example of what we can achieve through strong collaboration with our NHS, LIFTCo, and local system partners. By working together, we are transforming vacant areas into clinical environments and ensuring the NHS estate keeps pace with evolving community needs. CHP’s mission is to support high quality, accessible health facilities at the heart of the communities we serve. CHP providing £875k capital funding shows our commitment to making a tangible difference for local communities in Gosport.”

Lisa Medway, Head of Strategic Estates, NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board, said:

“The redevelopment of the new Talking Therapies base marks an important step in improving access to high quality mental health support for our communities. Repurposing underutilised space to create a modern, welcoming, and purpose built environment, we are investing in care that is easier to reach, more responsive, and designed around the needs of the people we serve. This new space reflects our commitment to early intervention, personalised treatment, and ensuring that everyone who needs help can receive it in accessible setting that promotes dignity and comfort.”

Dr Laura Dannahy, Divisional Director of Psychological Professions, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“This project is wonderful and it’s really good that all the partners involved are working closely with the service to ensure the environment is designed around the requirements of the clinical service teams to ensure the needs of the people we serve are met.”

Charlotte Douglass, Director for Solent Estates Partnership Limited, said:

“We’re proud to support the transformation of Brune Medical Centre and to play our part in bringing much needed mental health services closer to the community. By repurposing underused space into high quality therapy accommodation, this project demonstrates the real value that collaborative estate solutions can deliver for local people. We are delighted to be working with CHP, the ICB and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to create an environment that will help the Talking Therapies team deliver their valuable services and enable more residents to access the support they need, when and where they need it.”

CHP continues to work in partnership with Integrated Care Systems and local health and care providers to repurpose the NHS LIFT estate to better support patient needs and deliver care closer to home, supporting the broader goals of the NHS 10-year plan. It is through strategic investments like this that CHP is providing the high-quality, sustainable infrastructure needed to deliver integrated healthcare services closer to home for communities like Gosport.
